Vita brevis, ars longa
Occasio praeceps,
Experimentum periculosum,
Iudicium difficile.

Para mi padre, Otto Lima Gómez
-->

One day in the city of CARACAS in the 1950s, a stranger gave the singular name of Ars nova to a building in a cornersite of the Avenida Victoria. The name of the author or of the owner of this architecture,
plethoric of delirious marbles and winged details, remains still lost (2009). But his desire to resemble Hippocrates, the greatest of all Greek doctors, when he wrote in his Aphorisms I, 1: "Ὁ βίος βραχὺς, ἡ δὲ τέχνη μακρὴ, ὁ δὲ καιρὸς ὀξὺς, ἡ δὲ πεῖρα σφαλερὴ, ἡ δὲ κρίσις χαλεπή" (translated by Seneca in his Of Brevitate Vitae as "vitam brevem esse, longam artem), demonstrates the foundational feeling present in this urban corner to help endure the art of doing this city, to communicate the encouraging spirit with which was done this Caraquenian avenue, and launch to posterity his aspiration to make it last beyond the briefness of the life of those who executed it.

Today, the
Ars nova building on the Avenida Victoria is a Good of Cultural Interest of Venezuela. But, as the wise hippocratian aphorism did not stop at its first verse: "Vita brevis, ars longa", but continued saying: "occasio praeceps, experimentum periculosum, iudicium difficile"…: "the occasion is unique, the experiment dangerous, the judgment difficult", we don´t, either. Thanks, Hippocrates. And you, CARACAS, do never forget it.
